2011 Spring Season

GAME DATE: 6-11-11

Girls Older Division

The much-anticipated rematch between the Bloody Marys and Purple Panthers, which would have decided the champion of the older division, was instead won by Mother Nature. Due to bad weather and dangerous playing conditions, the New York City Parks Department shut down the Van Cortlandt Park fields and all Riverdale Soccer Club games were canceled. With this being the final weekend on the schedule, unfortunately the games will not be made up and the spring season is officially over. As a result, the Purple Panthers automatically hold on to first place in the standings and finish with a mark of three wins, four draws and one loss. The Bloody Marys finish just a single point behind, claiming the second spot in the four-team league with a final record of three wins, three draws and two losses. Fittingly, both losses came at the hands of the Purple Panthers.

GAME DATE: 6-4-11

Girls Older Division

Purple Panthers- 2

Bloody Marys - 1

For the second time this season, the older division’s two best teams faced off with bragging rights and the top spot in the standings on the line. Unfortunately for the Bloody Marys, this Saturday’s result was the same as what happened in round one a few weeks earlier -- another hard-fought loss to the Purple Panthers by a single goal. The Panthers would put immediate pressure on the Marys defense and scored to go up 1-0, but the rest of the first half would stay at a standstill as both teams’ aggressive play cancelled each other out. The second half started in a very similar fashion to the first, with the Panthers getting a quick goal to double their lead. However, the Marys would not stay quiet for much longer, as Tatiana Velazquez found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half a short time later. With momentum starting to shift, the Marys stepped up the offensive attack, but time was not on their side and they were unable to get the equalizer. Despite falling short in the end, the Marys received great hustle from Angelika Lopez, Elena Anderson, Bronagh Jones and Janell Rodriguez, while Gabriella Brown made some big stops to prevent the Panthers’ scoring from getting out of control. These two teams will meet again next weekend -- for the third and final head-to-head match -- to wrap up the spring season schedule and decide who takes first-place once and for all. The Bloody Marys must win to claim the title, while the Purple Panthers need just a draw or a victory.

GAME DATE: 5-28-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 4

Teal Titans - 0

Just as the warm summer weather slowly begins to creeps in, the Bloody Marys appear ready to start heating up themselves after a dominating 4-0 victory over the Teal Titans this past weekend. The Marys got on the scoreboard early with a goal by Kayla Quinonez and then doubled the lead a short time later on a successful penalty kick by Janell Rodriguez. Thanks to an aggressive offensive attack combined with strong coverage in their own end, the Bloody Marys managed to hold their opponents to just three shots on goal in the entire first half.  Following the break, the Marys turned up the intensity even more, continued to press the ball on offense and would add two insurance goals, which were both scored by Elena Anderson. Angelique Fenton, Bronagh Jones, Tonya Tushaj and Tatiana Velazquez all provided outstanding play on both sides of the field and helped keep the Titans at a standstill for most of the contest. The goalie tag team of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown shared their first shutout of the season and helped propel the Bloody Marys back up to first place in the older division.

GAME DATE: 5-21-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 2

Annoying Oranges - 2

Fresh off their first loss of the season, the Bloody Marys were determined to get back on track this weekend and immediately came out with a relentless offensive attack. This intense early pressure on the Annoying Oranges’ defense led to a goal by Kayla Quinonez and it gave the Marys a quick 1-0 lead. After falling behind, the Oranges began to match their opponent’s energy and evened the game a short time later. The Marys would temporarily break the tie following halftime on a goal by Alexandra Curumi, but the Oranges would again respond with an equalizer and the game finished in a draw. Janell Rodriguez, Angelique Fenton, Jailene Collins and Bronagh Jones worked hard to prevent the Annoying Oranges from taking over the game, while goalie Angelika Lopez made several outstanding saves throughout the game for the Bloody Marys. This is already the third draw of the season for the Marys -- to go along with two wins and one defeat -- but they did not lose any ground in the standings and still remain in second place within the older division.

GAME DATE: 5-14-11

Girls Older Division

Purple Panthers - 1

Bloody Marys - 0

The last two undefeated teams in the older division finally met this past weekend to determine who would stand atop the league standings. However, both sides were forced to play the contest shorthanded, as just eight players were available for each team. Offensive chances were hard to come-by during a scoreless opening half, but the pace began to pick up following the break and it was the Purple Panthers that eventually caught the Bloody Marys defense sleeping to score the only goal of the day. Trailing by a goal, the Marys’ Elena Anderson, Alexandra Curumi and Janell Rodriguez stepped up the pressure on the Panthers’s defense, but came up short in their attempt to even the game. The goalie tag team of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown continued their stellar play in net and did everything they could to give the Marys a chance to steal the game. With this result, the Purple Panthers remain undefeated and take over first place, while the Bloody Marys drop to the second spot.

GAME DATE: 5-8-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 2

Teal Titans - 1

When these two teams played each other earlier in the season, the game ended in a tie, so both squads were looking to break that deadlock this past weekend in their second meeting. The Bloody Marys failed to find the back of the net in the first half for the fourth straight contest, yet the team’s strong focus on defense helped keep the game scoreless at the break. The Marys stepped up their offensive attack in the second half and would strike first when a throw-in from Elena Anderson was misplayed by the opposing goalie. However, the Titans would not stay quiet for long and they answered back quickly to even the score at 1-1. Just as the two teams seemed destined to settle for yet another draw, the Marys managed to break the tie and secure a win on Elena Anderson's second goal of the day. The Bloody Marys received outstanding play on both sides of the ball by Jailene Collins, Janell Rodriguez, Kayla Quinonez, Tatiana Velazquez and Angelique Fenton, who all combined to help shut down the Titans’ offense after their lone goal.  The goalie tandem of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown continued to provide the Marys with outstanding play in net. This victory keeps the Bloody Marys undefeated -- with two wins as well as two draws through four games -- and in first place in the Older Division.

GAME DATE: 4-30-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 2

Annoying Oranges - 1

After another weekend of games were washed out by rain, both teams realized that wins will now be essential in the standings. However, neither side was able to find the back of the net during a scoreless first half that was played in a tight, defense-oriented style. Following the break, the Annoying Oranges would strike first by catching the Bloody Marys’ defense and goalie off guard to take a 1-0 lead. The Marys would not stay silent for long, though, as Elena Anderson took a slice out of the Oranges’ defense and scored to tie the game at one. Riding the momentum shift, Janell Rodriguez peeled through several of the Oranges’ defenders and found teammate Kayla Quinonez, who cut to the net and put in the go-ahead goal. Strong midfield and defensive play from Jailene Collens, Angelique Fenton and Bronagh Jones helped squeeze the juice out of the Oranges’ offense during the rest of the second half, while the goalie duo of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown gave the Marys much-needed energy to help keep their team in the game. As a result, the Marys would hold on for a 2-1 win -- their first victory of the season after opening with two consecutive draws.

GAME DATE: 4-16-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 2

Teal Titans - 2

With a chill in the air freezing both teams prior to the start of the game, the Titans started as hot as a smoldering fire. The Titans displayed an aggressive ball-control style that would help them take an early 1-0 lead and simultaneously hold the Bloody Marys off the scoresheet for the entire first half. When play resumed after the break, the Titans would strike early again and take what appeared to be a commanding 2-0 lead. However, with the start of the rain, so began the Marys’ comeback. The offensive pressure provided by Kayla Quinonez, Janell Rodriguez and Tonja Tushaj helped set up back-to-back goals from Elena Anderson and Alexandra Curumi to even the score. The Marys received outstanding defensive performances in the second half from Jailene Collins, Angelique Fenton and Tatiana Velazquez, while the sure-handed goalie duo of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown made several big stops to prevent their team from tasting defeat. This is the second straight draw for the Bloody Marys to open the 2011 spring schedule.

GAME DATE: 4-9-11

Girls Older Division

Bloody Marys - 1

Orange Team - 1

With the rain shutting down the fields in Van Cortland Park last weekend, the players were chomping at the bit to get the spring season started. The Orange Team would score the only goal during a very competitive, defensive first half. After the break, the Bloody Marys would step up the intensity and press their offensive attack, with Elena Anderson, Alexandra Curumi and Janell Rodriguez leading the way. The Marys would finally tie the score on a free kick delivered by Kayla Quinonez and the game would end in a 1-1 draw. The Bloody Marys received strong all-around efforts from Tonja Tushaj, Tatiana Velazquez and Bronagh Jones, as well as impressive play in net by the goalkeeping duo of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown.
