Girls Older Division tournament

Semifinals

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 2

Regal Pharmacy Blue Eagles - 0

Finals

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 2

Role Realty Silver Bullets - 0

The Zombies came into the tournament ready to maintain their top team status and controlled the flow of the semifinal game from the opening whistle. However, the team could not cash in on its offensive aggression and ended the first half in a scoreless tie with the Blue Eagles. In the second half, Kayla Quinonez would finally light up the scoreboard to give the Zombies a 1-0 lead, and then moments later, teammate Janell Rodriguez would cap off the scoring in the 2-0 win. The Zombies’ defenders of Tatiana Velazquez, Angelique Fenton, Tonja Tushaj, Bronagh Jones and Jhailyn Pichardo prevented the Eagles from flying on offense. The goalie tandem of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown secured the first round shutout and helped the Zombies advance to the finals.

It was only fitting for the championship game to be a rematch of the previous week’s contest that decided which team would win the division’s regular season crown. In three previous meetings, the Green Zombies and the Silver Bullets -- clearly the top two teams in the division all season long -- had won one apiece and tied once. The Zombies came out hungry, pressed the Bullets defense every chance possible and would open the scoring on a goal by Kayla Quinonez. In addition, the Zombies’ defense allowed only three shots on goals during the first half. After the break, the Zombies would find a hole in the Bullets defensive line, which allowed Elena Anderson to double her team’s lead. The Zombies would hold on to secure their second shutout of the day. With the win, the Zombies added the division tournament championship to their already-earned regular season title, while suffering just a single defeat all season. Helping the Zombies with stellar all-around play were Jasmine Vargas, Alexandra Curumi, Angelika Lopez and Janell Rodriguez, while goalie Gabriella Brown came through with yet another great performance in net.

Girls Older Division

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 3

Role Realty Silver Bullets - 1

With the best overall record and division title on the line, the Zombies came out immediately with an aggressive offensive attack and took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Elena Anderson. The Zombies continued to control the game’s tempo and put the Bullets further on their heels when Anderson found her way through the defense and doubled the lead with her second goal of the day. The Bullets would not stay quiet for long and cut the deficit to 2-1 just seconds before the halftime whistle. However, the Zombies would completely dominate play after the break, as the team’s midfielders and defenders would hold the Bullets to just four shots on goal in the second half. The Zombies would cap off the scoring with a header pass from Janell Rodriguez to Anderson, who completed her hat trick and secured the older division title. The Zombies also received stellar play on both sides of the ball from Angelika Lopez, Angelique Fenton, Jasmine Vargas and Bronagh Jones, while winning goalie Gabriella Brown continued her season-long stellar play. With the regular season title already in the bank, the Zombies will now look to add a postseason championship when they compete in this weekend’s girls older division tournament.

Girls Older Division

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 2

Regal Pharmacy Blue Eagles - 0

It is only fitting that the Zombies would be victorious in a game played on Halloween. The team lit up the scoreboard first when Kayla Quinonez caught the Eagles’ goalie on her weak side for a 1-0 lead. The Zombies would keep the Eagles’ offense in check throughout the rest of the first half and maintain the one goal lead going into halftime. After the break, the Zombies would strike again with a special delivery from Kayla Quinonez for her second goal of the day and put the game out of reach for the Eagles. The Zombies’ defensive unit of Tatiana Velazquez, Angelique Fenton, Jailene Collins and Jhailyn Pichardo helped anchor an impenetrable wall that the Eagles could not solve. The goalie tag-team of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown secured their second straight shutout and helped the Zombies move back into a tie for first place with the Silver Bullets. The two teams will face off next weekend to end the regular season and determine who takes the division title.

Westchester Youth Soccer League

Girls Under-14 Division 1

Riverdale Lions - 1

New Rochelle Power - 0

For the second time in three weeks, the Riverdale Lions inflicted a loss upon the undefeated first place team. After starting the season off with a tie and a pair of frustrating defeats, the Lions have responded with wins in three straight games. Against New Rochelle, the Lions immediately took the initiative and just narrowly missed on two scoring opportunities within the first ten minutes of the game. Riverdale would take the lead midway through the first half on a series of well executed passes from Alessandra Palmisano to Lucy Kohlihoff to Lucy Whitney, whose powerful shot found the back of the net. After dominating the first half, the Lions were able to withstand New Rochelle's furious attempts to tie the score. The Lions were led by the strong play of Zoe Klimley, Claire Hayes, Jilian Rohr and Samanatha Suero, while the defense was anchored by Ashleigh Edwards, Colleen Freyer, Daphne Gampel and Gabriella Miller. Mairead Connelly and Sara Spencer both contributed solid play in goal to share the shutout.

Girls Older Division

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 2

Red Velvets - 0

Both teams came into this game facing opposite situations, as the Zombies suffered their first lost of the season last week, while the Red Velvets celebrated their first win. The first half was dominated by the Zombies, who held the Red Velvets to just four shots on goal. Despite their midfielders and forwards applying constant pressure on the Red Velvets defense, the Zombies could not cash in and the half ended with zeroes across the scoreboard. In the second half, the Zombies finally got on the scoresheet off a swift kick by Kayla Quinonez that put her team up 1-0. The Zombies would double the lead when Alexandra Curumi put home an insurance goal later in the half to round out the scoring. The pressure provided by the Zombies’ Elena Anderson, Bronagh Jones, Jasmine Vargas and Janell Rodriguez helped keep the Red Velvets’ offensive attacks to a minimum. The Zombies also received outstanding play from the goalie duo of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown, who combined to share the shutout.

GAME DATE: 10-17-10

Girls Older Division

Role Realty Silver Bullets - 1

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 0

In a battle for first place, these two undefeated teams both came out with the intention of grabbing the coveted spot as top dog in the division. The Bullets would score the lone goal in a tightly-contested first half, as both squads had difficulty cracking the other’s defense. After the break, the Zombies would attempt to mount a rally behind the work of Janell Rodriguez, Elena Anderson and Tonya Tushaj, but time was not on their side and they suffered their first defeat of the season. The Silver Bullets take over sole possession of first place, while the Green Zombies fall to second in the girls’ older division.  The Zombies’ defenders of Tatiana Velazquez, Angelika Lopez and Bronagh Jones helped keep the Silver Bullets quiet throughout the second half, but their offense was unable to score the equalizer. Three games remain for each team, including one more pivotal meeting between the two on the final week of the regular season.

Regal Pharmacy Blue Eagles - 1

The undefeated streak continues for the Green Zombies. With some key members of the team unable to attend, heart and passion were the order of the day as the Zombies stepped up to meet the challenge. Even injuries to Angelique Fenton and Jhailyn Pichardo would not keep them on the bench as they shrugged off any pain by demanding to stay in the game. After falling behind by a goal early in the second half, Jasmine Vargas pulled the Zombies even with a nifty goal off a crisp corner kick by Elena Anderson. The defense was anchored by Angelika Lopez, while keeper Gabriella Brown held firm after allowing the earlier goal and helped ensure at least a tie for the Zombies.

The Zombies would cap off the scoring with Kayla Quinonez providing the third goal in a 3-0 win.  The Zombies received a strong all-around effort from Bronagh Jones, Tatiana Velazquez, Jailene Collins, Alexandra Curumi and Elena Anderson. The goalie duo of Angelika Lopez and Gabriella Brown combined to record the Zombies’ second shutout win and helped keep the team undefeated on the season.

Role Realty Silver Team - 2

In a contest of the last two undefeated teams, this game turned out to be all that was expected. Role Realty came out fast in the first half and put the Zombies in a hole early behind a goal by Stella Berfas. Then, the Silver Team would find a crack in the Zombies’ defense to quickly go up 2-0 on a goal by Alexa Edwards. The Zombies would not stay quiet long as a throw in pass from Janell Rodriguez led to a goal by Kayla Quinonez that cut the score to 2-1 at halftime. In the second half, the Zombies’ defense picked up the intensity and shut down the Silver Team’s offense. With the momentum shifting, the Zombies’ Kayla Quinonez would tie things up with her second goal of the game. As a result, both these teams maintain their undefeated records through the first quarter of the season. The Zombies’ defense of Jhailyn Pichardo, Tonya Tushaj, Elena Anderson and Angelika Lopez provided a great all-around effort in front of a similarly-solid performance by goalie Gabriella Brown.

Tierney Fine Foods Green Zombies - 1

Regal Pharmacy Blue Team - 0

This was a very well contested game right from the start, with both teams applying pressure on each other's defense. It would be the Zombies who would score the first and only goal of the game, with a crisp assist from Janell Rodriguez to a cutting Kayla Quinonez for the 1-0 lead. In the 2nd half, the Blue team would try to rally but couldn't find a hole in the Zombies’ defense and would fall short of tying the game. The Zombies were provided with great play on both sides of the ball from Tonja Tushaj, Jailene Collins, Sarah Fineman, Bronagh Jones and Jhailyn Pichardo, which helped goalie Gabriella Brown preserve the shut out win. The Zombies upped their record to 2-0 through the first two weeks of the season.
